Some of TikTok’s competitors haven’t had much luck with gaming, though. Snapchat launched playable games in 2019 only to announce it would shut down gaming in August, and Facebook is shutting down its gaming platform on Friday, Oct. 28. Netflix, which launched its gaming product last year, recently said it would double down and push into cloud gaming as well as launch more games. TikTok had not officially announced the launch of its mobile gaming pilot, but a spokesperson confirmed the effort began testing in various global markets a couple of weeks ago. There are hundreds of millions of videos that feature the Lalala challenge.

The move, if successful, could one day position TikTok as a home for casual mobile gaming that routes around Apple and Google’s app stores — and, potentially, their cut of future gaming revenues. The launch follows reports earlier this year that the social video app maker was looking to expand into HTML5 gaming after first testing the waters with gaming giant Zynga last November. The two companies had then teamed up to launch a TikTok exclusive title, Disco Loco 3D, which was similar to Zynga’s successful game (by way of acquisition) High Heels. Black teens also stand out for being more likely to use TikTok compared with Hispanic teens, while Hispanic teens are more likely than their peers to use WhatsApp. TikTok’s foray into games mirrors similar efforts made by major tech firms seeking to retain users. Facebook launched Instant Games in 2016 and streaming firm Netflix (NFLX.O) also recently added games to its platform.

What makes the challenge so hard is that you need to match the hand movement. Ipsos recruited the teens via their parents who were a part of its KnowledgePanel, a probability-based web panel recruited primarily through national, random sampling of residential addresses. The survey is weighted to be representative of U.S. teens ages 13 to 17 who live with parents by age, gender, race, ethnicity, household income and other categories.

New party games and challenges are released and become viral almost every minute, but some that have become a staple are 10 Second Storytelling, Now Look At This, If I Was You Dance Challenge, and Duet Me. It’s no secret that TikTok is popular, but the sheer scale of its gaming community has not garnered the same attention as other platforms. 50% of daily active users viewed some form of gaming content on TikTok in 2022. Moreover, 82% of TikTok users say they play games at least once a week.
